Music for Healing – Gareth Malone
Choirmaster Gareth Malone’s new release on 8th November 2019 called Music for Healing champions the restorative power of music. The album features solo piano, choir and strings, with each piece named after a different month of the year, reflecting the role that the year’s natural rhythms play in the stages of healing.
Having worked with a range of communities facing challenging circumstances over the last few years, Malone feels that music can transcend hardships and unite individuals in their journeys. The album also comes from personal experience, as it was conceived during 2018, a challenging year for Malone in his own personal life. His grandfather passed away and his wife was expecting their third child, but during all this time of change, music making took on a therapeutic quality.
Malone explained, ‘After many years conducting choirs under extraordinary circumstances, even the Military Wives choir, I felt that I had neglected my first love: writing music.’
He has also worked with the choir for the Invictus Games, as well as with friends of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, which he describes as ‘another life changing and life affirming project.’‘Music for Healing is a personal journey through the year and is inspired by his own feelings about each month: birthdays of loved ones, marriages, funerals – all are in this music. This music helped him to heal.
Gareth Malone has brought choral music to the fore through his award-winning television series, concerts and recordings. He was made OBE in 2012 for his services to music and is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.
